Welcome to the Southern end of Brevard County, Florida where 33 miles of Atlantic barrier islands connect with the mainland via three causeways.

 

WEATHER

Over 300 days of sunshine offer residents and visitors an ideal climate. The average temperature is 72 degrees F, with an average daily high of 90 degrees in July and August. The Atlantic Ocean provides a lovely breeze that cools the summer and warms the winter.

Residents must apply for service at City Hall in Melbourne, 900 E. Strawbridge Ave. Ph:(321) 727-2900.   Palm Bay residents receive water and sewer service from Palm Bay Utilities located at City Hall, 120 Malabar Rd., S.E..  Phone: (321) 952-3420  Automobile Tags-Melbourne - South Brevard Service Complex, 1515 Sarno Rd., (321) 255-4410.  Palm Bay-Interchange Square, 1155 Malabar Rd N.E., (321) 952-4540.  All new residents must apply for Florida tags and titles within 10 days after they begin work, enroll children in school, or apply for a homestead exemption. Florida insurance is required prior to applying for tags and titles. Driver Licenses-Melbourne, 3442 N. Harbor City Blvd. or 601 E. University Blvd.  Florida licenses must be obtained 30 days from the day a resident begins work, enrolls children in school, applies for homestead exemption, or registers to vote. Homestead Tax Exemption-Apply in person in Melbourne, South Brevard Service Complex located at 1515 Sarno Rd., (321) 264-6700. Florida residents may apply up to March 1. Documents required: Florida drivers license, Florida vehicle registration, Florida’s voter card and social security card, (321) 255-4440. Trash Collection-Harris Sanitation, A Waste Management System (321) 723-4455. Voter Registration-A Florida voter registration application must be completed. TRANSPORTATION

Air Travel: Melbourne International Airport is a hub to major carrier Delta Airlines.  Air Freight: Forward Logistics Group (321) 725-8218 provides cargo service. Call the Melbourne International Airport at (321) 723-6227 for other air freight information.

 

Bus Service: Local public bus transportation is provided by Space Coast Area Transit (321) 633-1878.  Long distance bus travel is provided by Greyhound Bus Lines with a terminal conveniently located at the Melbourne International Airport  (321) 723-4323.

 

LOCAL ECONOMY

Brevard County has a highly skilled, diverse labor pool.  Because of the diversity of local industry and business, the county enjoys economic stability.  Low unemployment rates at around 5% reflect this stability.   Per Capita personal income was at $26,650 as of year 2000. Median household income is estimated at $42,500.  New and expanding businesses were responsible for 4,300 new jobs in Brevard between 1996 and 1997. High-tech industries flourish in Brevard, which is home to several Fortune 500 companies.  Manufacturing accounts for 14% of local employment compared to the state average of 9%.

EDUCATION 

Public Schools - Twenty-eight elementary, six middle, seven high, and two specialty schools are located throughout South Brevard. Call the Brevard County School Board (321) 631-1911 for additional public school information. Private Schools - Fourteen private schools offer religious instruction. Air Academy - Florida Air Academy, (321) 723-3211, is an official Air Force ROTC program (grades 7-12). Private Post Secondary Colleges include: Florida Tech (321) 768-8000, Rollins College-Brevard (321) 726-0432, Orlando College-Melbourne Campus (321) 254-6459, and Webster University (321)722-5062.  Barry University (321) 453-6253, is a Post-Secondary Catholic College.  Public Post Secondary Colleges include Brevard Community College (321) 632-1111, and University of Central Florida-Brevard (321) 632-4127.

OUTDOOR RECREATION

Water sports - swimming, sailing, surfing, diving, and boating offer recreation for the entire family. Fishing is plentiful - snook, tarpon, shark, flounder, bluefish, seatrout. Area lakes offer the finest freshwater fish, while the Atlantic Ocean is home to saltwater species. Fishing licenses required. Golf enthusiasts have twelve courses from which to choose, while tennis players can choose from eight tennis courts. Soccer tournaments are gaining popularity, with games being played during two seasons-indoor and outdoor. Enjoy a myriad of parks, including eight beachside, 27 general locations, and twelve recreation and community centers. Visit Brevard Zoo and experience the "wild side"... open seven days a week.  Space Coast Stadium is the home to the Washington Nationals and Brevard Manatees. The Grant Seafood Festival is the third weekend in February. The Melbourne Art Festival is held the fourth weekend in April.  Discover the "real Florida" at Forever Florida - a nature preserve and working cattle ranch with nature tours and up close animal encounters.

INDOOR RECREATION

Keep your cool inside while the temps soar outside. Cultural lovers can enjoy a variety of entertainment, including Broadway and celebrity performances at the Maxwell King Center,(321/242-2219) and the Henegar Center of the Performing Arts (321/723-8698),  to local performers at Melbourne Civic Theatre (321/723-6935) and other community theaters. Brevard Symphony Orchestra (321/242-2024) and the local municipal bands & community orchestra offer performances year-round. Many museums and galleries showcase the works of local artists and traveling exhibits.  The Museum of Art and Science, (321/242-0737) offers more than 35 hands-on exhibits for young people.  Shopping is a pleasure at Shoppers World of Indian Harbor Beach, the Shoppes of Hidden Harbors and Simon Melbourne Square Mall with many other fine centers located throughout the South Brevard Area.  A favorite bargain spot is the Super Flea and Farmers Market. Select antiques, specialty shoppes and unique restaurants can be found in Historic Downtown Melbourne and the Eau Gallie downtown district.  Melbourne Greyhound Park is open seven days a week, offering live dog racing from January through April.  

SPECIAL ATTRACTIONS

 A short drive north on I-95, is Kennedy Space Center and Astronaut Hall of Fame. This exciting, popular attraction features 3 different IMAX films taking you into space, life-size replica Space Shuttle Explorer, and International Space Station Center. If you’re in Brevard County during shuttle flights, take advantage of viewing a launch, and added bonus that many only dream of seeing.
